Installing Your Engine Lock
Please note that while this set of instructions is accurate, it will be updated as the product is finalized. Pictures will be included to help with installation and clarification.
Installation should be performed carefully and in accordance with vehicle safety standards. If you are not comfortable performing installation yourself, professional installation is recommended.
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
Fully disconnect your battery that is powering the starter from the car.
Step 2: Get to the starter
All cars are slightly different when it comes to engine layout, however, you will normally find the starter on the left or right side of the engine bay.
Tip: Check out Youtube videos on changing the starter on your particular vehicle. They can show you tips and tricks on being able to access it easier and giving you a little more room for the wiring you are about to do
Step 3: Wiring
All starters will have at least two wires coming down to the starter. A primary battery cable and a smaller starter signal wire. Locate the thinner wire and identify if its connecting point is a plug or a terminal connector.
If it is a plug, follow it back up from the starter a few inches. This will give you extra wire to help you splice in the lock. Once you have 3-5+ inches of wire, cut the wire.
If it is a terminal connector, unbolt the wire from the starter and use the provided terminal connectors to connect the Engine Lock
Step 4: Connect your lock
Look at your lock and you will see 4 wires coming out of the enclosure. One wire will be for power, one wire will be for ground, and two wires will be for the starter. Grab one of the two wires for the starter and connect it to the wire you just cut coming out of the starter. Next, grab the second wire for the starter and connect it to the other wire that is coming out of the engine. From here it will look like you spliced the lock into the starter connection to the car.
Tip: When splicing the wires, make sure to use connectors that can be easily unplugged and plugged back into something else. This is to help in the future if the starter or anything needs to be worked on down there and the mechanic or yourself needs to remove the Engine Lock temporarily. Do not worry, however, just because you are able to easily get to the product right now does not mean it will be easy for someone on the street to get to it the same.
Step 5: Power the Engine Lock
Connect the red power wire to the positive terminal of your battery. Connect the black wire to the negative terminal of your battery or to a grounding point.
Step 6: Place the Engine Lock
Place the Engine Lock in a location that you can lock it down to. You can zip tie it or clean an area and place double sided tape on it. Keep it away from any surface of the engine or transmission as they produce heat and could ruin some of the electronics and the enclosure.
Tip: We recommended zip tying it to the wire harness that is coming down to the starter. It’s a location that is already there and can be easily accessed and moved by you or the mechanic if needed in the future
Step 7: Reconnect your battery
Step 8: Connect your device
Now that the Engine Lock is installed, place your Master Key in a powered USB port (preferably one in the car) and wait for the light to go solid. When this happens, your master key has successfully connected with the lock. Press and hold the button on the master key for at least 5 seconds. The indicator light will turn off, indicating pairing mode is active. Go into your smart phone and open the bluetooth settings. Select the “Road Guardian Engine Lock” and when prompted, select “Pair”. Your phone is now connected.
Tip: Make sure to have everything ready when you perform this step. Have your phone opened and in the bluetooth settings so that way you are ready to go.
Step 9: Try it out
Try and turn your car on and ensure it turns over. If your engine turns over (car is running), turn your car back off, turn your bluetooth off, ensure your master key is unplugged and try turning your car back on. If your engine did not turn on then you have successfully installed your Engine Lock device.
Tip: This is an important step. The goal is to make sure the car does not turn on when your device’s bluetooth is not on or the master key is not plugged in. If the car does not start (turn over) then that is a good sign. Turn your bluetooth back on and try starting your car again. If it starts (turns over) then you are good to go.
Other suggestions:
Keep your Master Key secure
The Master Key is required for authorizing additional users and can be used to temporarily enable vehicle access.
Mechanic / Service Visits
If leaving your vehicle for service, plug in the Master Key to allow normal operation.
After Service
Always remove the Master Key after retrieving your vehicle.
